Study Shows Majority of Patients with Long Covid Were Vaccinated

“Vaccination may protect against long COVID,” argued Harvard Health Publishing in 2023. “Unvaccinated people should still consider getting the vaccine even if they've already had the disease, according to the researchers.”

However, “A recent study found that the majority of patients who suffered from long Covid during a time when vaccines and antiviral treatments were widely available were vaccinated,” reported Epoch Health on February 28. “Mass vaccination and available antiviral treatments have not prevented vaccinated individuals from experiencing lingering Covid-19 symptoms.”

The article cited a study entitled “Long-Covid Prevalence and Its Association with Health Outcomes in the Post-Vaccine and Antiviral-Availability Era,” recently published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine. The researchers with Chiang Mai University examined 390 people who contracted Covid-19 during the fifth wave of the pandemic for one year in Thailand. The research team found that 97% of participants were vaccinated and 98% underwent antiviral treatment, yet 78% of participants also contracted long covid during the study’s observational period.

While the findings do support “a significant prevalence of long Covid during a period characterized by extensive vaccination and antiviral treatment availability,” it is important to note the Sinovac Covid-19 vaccine was commonly employed in Thailand in addition to the Janssen, AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines. It is unclear if the study’s findings are generalizable in other countries using different types of vaccines.
