Contrary to Claims of Transparent Research, NIH Alters Documents to Avoid FOIA Requests

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) argues it generally aims to “improve health and save lives.” Likewise, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) asserts that it supports research to advance the understanding, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of infectious, immunologic, and allergic diseases.”

However, when the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic subpoenaed Dr. David Moren, a former NIH/NIAID advisor, emails revealed Dr. Moren intentionally avoided public accountability and mishandled government information. This includes but is not limited to a) NIAID officials giving “forewarning of potentially damaging FOIA productions” to outside parties like Dr. Peter Daszak, President of Eco Health Alliance; b) NIAID employees deploying the NIH FOIA Office to “assist in the concealment or destruction of official records;” and c) NIAID employees continuously using “language to avoid keyword searches” vital to the FOIA request process.”

While evidence continues to emerge, the Select Subcommittee ultimately determined the “evidence taken together suggests a conspiracy at the highest levels of NIH and NIAID to avoid public transparency regarding the Covid-19 pandemic.”
