US and EU Officials Distort How NATO Intelligence Sharing Supports Western Security Interests

“Donald Trump is considering a reduction in intelligence sharing with members of NATO, which depends on the U.S. for the type of information that has helped Ukraine fend off Russia, according to foreign officials informed of the plans,” reported Politico on July 10, 2024. “A cutoff or significant scaling back of U.S. intelligence sharing with NATO allies and partners would have an immediate, profound, and potentially long-lasting adverse impact on Western security interests,” shared former CIA director John Brennan.

However, the anonymous NATO, EU and US officials included in the Politico article alongside Brennan not only fail to elaborate on how US Intelligence actively deters Russian threats for Europe, but the article fails to disclose how the US has worked with international allies and partners to directly surveil and seemingly censor anti-NATO rhetoric online. A public presentation showcases several narratives a US government-funded researcher at the University of Little Rock Arkansas explored online, characterizing problematic content as anything anti-Nato, including content “mocking/ridiculing” NATO or insinuating “NATO is a joke - Not a real threat.”

Other narratives of concern included an “anti-Trudeau narrative suggesting he is not a friend of the Canadian-Indian community.” The same researcher also has a history working with “NATO Strategic Communications and Public Affairs, European Defense agencies, Australian Defense Science and Technology agency’s strategic policy group, Singapore government, Arkansas Attorney General’s office, among others.”

While there are legitimate reasons to share US intelligence with foreign allies, Politico and the anonymous officials interviewed failed to elaborate on the sort of intelligence Trump would reduce sharing with NATO. Ultimately, the US intelligence currently being shared with NATO allies seemingly includes methods to sustain undue surveillance and censorship.
